Wilton 902-246 Soft-Cover Cake-Decorating Guide, Course 2: Flowers and BordersReviewsThis book is nice. It has recipes for different cakes and icings. It shows you step by step how do the flowers and different borders. I reccommend this book if you like to decorate cakes. Wilton is an industry leader for a very good reason. The fact is that they are the absolute go to guys for learning anything having to do with baking, decorating, or creating a memorable occasion. There are several books to this series and if you need in person lessons, they are taught at most Michael's and AC Moore stores across the country. If you are lucky enough to live in Chicago, Wilton offers instruction at their wonderful school and the rates are actually quite reasonable for all that is learned. Meanwhile, these books combined with the practice board and a few disposable bags, you can really learn so much. Remember, no one is born knowing how to do this stuff :) Best wishes to all!! Liz Calamusa Custom Cakes and Beyond [...] This book is wonderful - very easy to understand and simple instructions. Gives the student numerous ideas for future projects. The seller I bought the book from was also wonderful - the owner left a personal handwritten thank you note in my packaging. ***Buyer beware*** This book (and the others in the series) sells for under $5 in JoAnne's. Amazon is ripping you off at $10. Know why it's so cheap? It's only about 30 pages, and much of the book is advertising for their products. OK, it does have some good information and helpful photos, and you can learn how to do some tricky stuff with it, but don't assume the price is right at Amazon. I have just completed Wilton's Course 1 through the local Michael's store and was preparing for Course 2. The kit includes oval cake pans, so I thought I would save money on the kit since I didn't expect to use those pans again. I was thrilled to find this via Amazon.com and expedited delivery would get it to me before the first day of class and still save money over buying in the store (even with their coupon!). When the package arrived I was like a kid on Christmas morning; couldn't wait to open it up. It was soft (whereas the kit in the store comes in a box). No problem, I thought. After all, it's used and I would just throw the box away. But when I opened it, I found I only received the BOOK - no course materials/tools! I've gone back to the listing and don't find any description of "what's included" (or not included) nor the word "book" in the listing indicating that's all it would be. It's certainly not worth returning, but I'm disappointed....and now I need to find those materials anyway at additional cost! On the positive side, the book is in pristine condition. I just wish the seller had been explicit in the listing. Average Rating:![]() |

Wilton Cake Decorating for Beginners GuideReviewsI used to decorate cakes quite a bit in high school. Let's just say I'm out of practice. This is a good review/beginner book. Highly recomended. Found for a teenager who is interested in cake decorating. A little more basic than what was expected but a good source for how tos. This "book" is more like a brochure.. or one of those checkout cookbooks. It does have some basic tips in it but I surely wouldn't pay more than $5 for it!! My daughters 14th birthday was comming up and with the trend she was wanting cake decorating supplies. This is a great book for them to help them learn and work with. The bad part is, is that I also purchased the 50 peice Wilton Cake Set for her as well and well it also came with the book. So I did end up with an extra book, but at the price it wasI was not to concerned This was included in a Wilton decorating kit I bought from Michaels priced at around $32.00. I was dissapointed that the book was so small. I am suspicious about the 5 star reviews... I bought the 53 piece Cake Decorating set which included this "book". First of all the book is 40 pages. I will give it credit that it DOES have decent instruction on trimming and icing a layer cake, as well as good instruction on using piping bags. Where it starts to fizzle is in the actual using of the tips and creating designs, flowers etc. ALSO it comes with disposable bags, and touts in the booklet that all students beginner to advanced use these disposable bags, but in the instructions it shows someone using a real professional bag. I note this because their technique for filling the bag with icing is MUCH MUCH more difficult in using the disposable bags (in fact, I have vowed to buy only real professional bags from now on)! There are literally 7 1/2 (TINY) pages of decorating instruction. Weak. very weak. There is a recipe for royal icing... but I wouldn't recommend you use it. I did... and it was not good. Anyway... the book is.. not a total waste of money, but I personally wouldn't be happy paying more than $4.00 total cost with shipping for it. Average Rating:![]() |

Weddingstar Stylish Embrace Cake TopperReviewsWe purchased this wedding topper for our very small, very intimate reception at the Steakhouse at Camelot in Las Vegas. Not only did it look simply amazing on our two-tier red cake, it really fit the style we were looking for! Definitely recommend this for any discerning bride. This is the cake topper for my daugheters wedding. It is beautiful but is not a real true white it is a creamy white which she wasn't too happy about becuase I emailed the seller and the responded that is it white. It is still very beautiful and they are going to make it work. This cake topper is beautiful. Not too big, not too small. Very elegant and classy! Cant wait to use it in our wedding. This cake topper is the perfect complement to the style and feel of my wedding. It has a traditional feel to it, yet is very unique, like nothing I have been able to find in stores near me. I'm very pleased and can't wait to see it on top of my wedding cake! The picture doesn't even show how beautiful this cake topper really is. There are little details that the picture doesn't show and it just all adds to how nice it looks. I knew I'd like it, but when I saw it in person, it was even better than any picture I had seen, it will look wonderful on the top of my wedding cake! :) Average Rating:![]() |

Fashion NuggetReviewsGreat service. It only took a few days to ship. I am very satisfied with my purchase. Cake is a band that I have recently found out about. I heard about them from a friend, and this CD is the first one of theirs that I bought/listened to. It's fantastic! There are many different elements in their music (country, hip-hop, jazz, rockabilly, etc) and it makes them a very unique band. They are now my favorite band, I own all of their CDs, and I would recommend this music to anybody - mainly because it appeals to so many different palates. :) Solid album. Its got some great songs on it, in fact is pretty much all great songs. For a Cake fan this is a must own. For someone who is not a Cake fan, well, buy it anyway, this will make you one. Cake struck a moist harmony between their gritty jams, catchy instincts, and sardonic wit with this attuned sophomore outshining anything assimilated afterward. This is a great CD from a great band- especially the cover on I will survive is brilliant. Cake is like the Thrills, Polarbears and the Beatles one of the few bands that sounds great and real. The twisted cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is a statement of intent, while the cool jazz riffs from the band's trumpet player are part of what makes tracks like "Daria," "It's Coming Down," and "Frank Sinatra" so original... |

Comfort EagleReviewsThis is definitely their best album. You will like it whether you're a Cake fan or not! Catchy, danceable, drivable, and a lot of fun. I suppose this review could apply to any of Cake's recordings, because, if there's one thing McCrea and company does well, it's maintain a creative consistenty throughout all of the records they have produced over the years. The overall sound of the band doesn't change all that much, either, but why mess with a good thing? Who could have applied horns, polyrhythm, and counterpoint so effectively but this unique upstart from Sacramento? If I had to point to one aspect of McCrea's writing that I particularly like, it would be the overall narrative. When he isn't pointing fingers or rooting out hypocrisy, hMcCrea weaves some of the most compelling tales about people other than himself. Opera Singer, Rick James, Commisioning a Symchony in C, and I Bombed Korea, to name but a few, are just the tips of the storytelling iceberg for McCrea, and something tells me he isn't through by a long shot. Hey, John, it's 2009. How about another album? This was a replacement for the identical cd that left my possesion. That's how much I like this cd. Quirky, fun to listen to- what's not to like? I bought this album on the strength and humor of the "Short Skirt Long Jacket" music video. Before that, I knew Cake only through sparse listenings of "Never There" on the radio, so I really wasn't sure what to expect. This was one of those CDs that I only listened to really one song at first, "Short Skirt Long Jacket", until I expanded slowly throughout the CD once I started driving. It's amazing how many CDs I finally listened to in full once I started driving as opposed to what I used to, and currently do now that I'm not driving in the city, when I just listen to the singles over and over again. Anyhow... 1. Opera Singer - Very cool opener. I immediately love the horns. The narcissistic topic is kind of neat, too; it creates a cool dichotomy between the monotony of his voice and the subject matter. Every album deserves to put a good foot foward and this one does. It sets a nice tone and establishes their music ideas for the album. However, it's only above average, which is still pretty good. Four out of five stars. 2. Meanwhile, Rick James... - While, this is not, in fact, something that happened to lead singer John McCrea, it is possible that the comical lyrics of the song, which involve Rick James putting the sex on an unsuspecting gentleman's lady, took place in some shape or form in the past few decades, especially in light of what we all learned from Charlie Murphy. As an aside, did you know Rick James' first band was with Neil Young and they were called the Mynah Birds? I didn't. Anyhow, this song is pretty fun. The tune goes from bleak verse to oddly cheery hook. That juxtaposition gives it enough for four. Four out of five stars. 3. Shadow Stabbing - A very light track with some good musicianship and fun lyrics. Four out of five stars. 4. Short Skirt - Long Jacket - When this track first came out, I used to blast it in my Creative Nomad 128 MB MP3 player in 2001 while I'd cut the grass. Now it's an 80 gig iPod, but if nothing else, it is a very good song to cut the grass to. This song musically builds upon all of the simplest ideas of a successful pop song and does it to perfection. It teeters between anticipation and satisfaction and just when you think you are satisfied, it adds a new layer to the song, such as in the third verse when the backing vocals and the castanet are added. There was a reason this one was the first single. Five out of five stars. 5. Commissioning a Symphony In C - This song is a neat little history lesson. The lyrics are about an Austrian nobleman who was commissioned to compose a symphony in C and that process. Surprisingly, it makes a very good alternative song. Four out of five stars. 6. Arco Arena - The guys from Cake are from Sacramento, so I suppose it would make sense that they would have an ode to their "home arena" at some point. It's a pretty cool, lyricless jam. Four out of five. 7. Comfort Eagle - You may know this one from the credits of Shallow Hal. Or not. Again, some nice twists on traditional pop music ideas. Four out of five stars. 8. Long Line of Cars - At this point, I must point out how talented the bassist is for Cake. He does some really cool stuff on this song, among other songs, but he really keeps this one going. However, the ending really drags out on this one. Three out of five stars. 9. Love You Madly - This is really bassist Gabe Nelson's song to lose. The stuff he does is simple, but done with extreme precision. I think this was a response to a Doors' song of a similar name "Love Her Madly", exhausting the point that McCrea wants to do what Morrison says. The song works very well. Five out of five stars. 10. Pretty Pink Ribbon - A very simple, formulaic pop number. However, with Cake, it is about their production and precision, knowning what is too much and when to go overboard a little bit. This song finds a tremendous balance in those areas. It is my favorite song on the album. Five out of five stars. 11. World of Two - A nice waltz takes us out of the album. The backing is executed very nicely, but the hook is a little too cliche for my tastes. The bridge works very nicely though. Four out of five stars. Final grades: 1. Opera Singer - Four stars. 2. Meanwhile, Rick James... - Four stars. 3. Shadow Stabbing - Four stars. 4. Short Skirt - Long Jacket - Five stars. 5. Commissioning A Symphony In C - Four stars. 6. Arco Arena - Four stars. 7. Comfort Eagle - Four stars. 8. Long Line of Cars - Three stars. 9. Love You Madly - Five stars. 10. Pretty Pink Ribbon - Five stars. 11. World of Two - Four stars. This album on the surface would appear great, with all of the four and five star ratings. But sadly, the songs do not come that well connected to each other to make a truly great album and rather come off as a collection of above average singles. So instead of being "highly recommended", I can only grant Comfort Eagle a "recommended". I stumbled across this group when I overheard a catchy bass riff with lyrics about a short skirt and long jacket. I googled those words and it brought me to Cake. I bought the mp3's here on Amazon (got to love DRM-free mp3's) and this has become my new favorite band. I love the style and attitude of the singer with its clever lyrics. I was reacquainted with back-in-the-day memorable lyrics like "no phone, no phone" and "somebody left with the cup". The free samples accurately reflect the entire content of this album. When two-fifths of Cake defected to form Deathray after the release of their sophomore album, Fashion Nugget, some wondered if Sacramento's answer to Camper Van Beethoven would disappear into the land of one-hit wonders--especially since Cake's lone hit, "The Distance," had been penned by departing guitarist Greg Brown... |

Prolonging the MagicReviews3 1/2 Following what is mostly referred as their best, PTM does prolong the intellectual grooves the band emits so well, though signs already become apparent the band was leaning towards a radio-refined palate with ready made, predetermined arsenal in tow. Superb.....for an old classic rock fan like me, I was utterly amazed at how much I enjoy this group. I truly get that good old "West Coast" feeling when I listen to this music. Having been a long time Cake listener on the West Coast and also having seen them numerous times in concert, I believe that 'Prolonging The Magic' is quite probably their best effort. 'You Turn The Screws' is up there to the top of my favourite songs by Cake. This album delivers from the first moment to the very last without a seconds hesitation. Cake is infectious and highly listenable, they also don't seem to have a quality that fades or makes them sound like a flash in the pan or dated as many other bands do. It's hard to produce good music that stands the test of time and that also sounds incredible in concert. I've been to hundreds of shows over the years in probably just as many genres, but seeing Cake preform in a very small club in Hollywood for roughly 50 people, has to be best show I've ever seen, bar none. No, I didn't get to see Bowie during the Heathen tour going through the Five Burroughs, either. That show was probably the best show ever done for modern man, and the buzz on it was tremendous - but alas, I missed it. So, back to Cake ... Where are they now? Still touring ... at least for now. I would suggest getting out there and seeing them while you still can. They always play the hits and the large crowds always seem to know all the lyrics. John McCrea has stated that he's probably nearing the end of his run as a performance musician and wants to 'return to the earth ... and farm'. Cake and their reception ... Unfortunately, John McCrea seems to have taken a lot of the criticism the band received over the years and internalized it deeply. Maybe too deep. I'm not speculating here either, as it's been much talked about amongst Cake fans and in the media. I guess it's hard not to though when some of the mainstream reviewers were pretty harsh and very dismissive. The good thing about Cake though, is that history will remember them well and hold them a coveted spot in the small group of musicians that had a strong and lasting impact on the modern music scene without completely selling out or imploding all over themselves. ... ... "Prolonging The Magic" was almost like an afterglow from Fashion Nugget. The edginess mellowed into warm smoothness, the sarcasm burnished into whisky-warm wit. The charm was still obvious and, at first glance, little had changed. After all, the first thing you hear is a song called "Satan Is My Motor." Around the middle of the album is a delightful bit of nonsense called "Sheep Go To Heaven." But then the little things start to stick in your mind, like the Country Western pedal steel that glides through "Walk On By." Or the jazzy underpinnings of "When You Sleep" (featuring Cake's secret weapon, Vincent DiFiore's trumpet). And the descriptively solid slice of life "Alpha Beta Parking Lot." For those looking for the alt-rock ironic pop will find plenty here. There's the hit single of "Never There" and the equally good "You Turn The Screws." John McCrea's trademark sing-speak is one of the things that makes Cake such a dependable pleasure, and on those songs he works it to perfection. There may not be an arch cover (ala "Nugget's" take on "I Will Survive" or Pressure Chief's go at Bread's "Guitar Man"), but there is a straightforward - well almost - love song in "Let Me Go." I'd probably alternate "Prolonging The Magic" as my second favorite Cake album next to "Pressure Chief," but as far as the mellowing of Cake after the departure of Greg Brown (who wrote "The Distance"), this is as close to perfection as the band ever got again. Cake is great, what can I say? And this cd has one of my favorites, "You Turn the Screws". Average Rating:![]() |

A kinder, gentler Cake? You'd never know it from listening to the opening track, a ditty with the rather unconventional title "Satan Is My Motor." But the truth is, most of Prolonging the Magic finds the Sacramento, California, quintet toning down the arch commentary of tracks such as "Rock and Roll Lifestyle" and "The Distance" from albums Motorcade of Generosity and Fashion Nugget... |

Noah's Ark [VHS]ReviewsI bought this movie because i love stories about the bible and i like jon voight. But this is a terrible, terrible movie. Talking about how noah's sons and their wives were not married before they were on the ark, etc. Take my advice don't waste your money on this piece of junk. AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL!!!! This movie is nowhere near the story of the Bible. Not even good fiction, get WATER WORLD with Kevin Kostner if you want good flood fantasy, but don't get this piece of excrement. I bought this sometime ago, but returned it to the kindley seller who took it back. Whoever wrote the script for this movie apparently never read the Bible, or even checked to see if the presentation of facts was accurate. I'm not going into the falacies, and chronologically incorrect things presented. I will, however, warn anyone who chooses to watch this in an effort to learn correct biblical facts, there are a multitude of incorrect presentations. This was the most inaccurate movie on biblical times I've ever viewed. I purchased this video thinking and hoping I was getting a great version of a wonderful Bible story. NOT! This is a very poor attempt at best and does a great disservice to the Truth of the Bible. Don't waste your hard earned cash on this poorly written movie. I wish I had looked at Amazon first and read the reviews. I would be $14.95 richer right now. The movie itself wasn't so bad, and the special effects were very good, but------ Well, it certainly isn't something I'd advise as a means of helping children understand the the Noah of Genesis. It's the worst depiction of any Biblical movie I've ever seen (and I think I have every one ever made, except this one, which went directly into the trash). No, indeed, anyone who'd use this movie as a teaching tool for children, knows absolutely nothing about the Biblical account. I agree with the opinion that the writers, producers, etc, deliberately made a mockery of this story for their own secular minded purposes. Average Rating:![]() |

Another in Robert Salmi's march of modern TV classics, Noah's Ark brings the ultimate disaster story to the small screen with impressive effects and handsome production design. "Liberties were taken for dramatic purposes," warns the opening credits and, to be sure, this shouldn't be taken as gospel (pardon the pun)... |

Piece of Cake Collection Set [VHS]ReviewsGreat series and recount of the early days of the phony war before the real WWII got getting serious. It deals nicely with the loses and removes the one man army against the enemy mith of war movies or any action movie per se. It starts with the misconceptions of the old WWI rules of engagement vs the real field experience. Then it shows how the RAF started adapting to reality and the day to day survival and the no man is a hero we are doing our job feeling. Great series overall. Word of advice this version has no CC. A story of the RAF in World War II from beginning to end. A squadron taking to the air to fight the Nazis all the while trying to be young and carefree. It is mesmerizing and exciting to watch. "A Piece of Cake" is a wonderful historical story of Spitfire pilots, aviation battle history, and human strength and frailty. This is a watch more than once series for your library.Piece of Cake Having seen this mini-series on American television back when it first came out, it was nice to revisit an old friend. Although a bit draggy in parts, and although it uses the same aerial sequences at times, the video has held up well over the years. The theme music is well done, played by the London Philharmonic, and fits the mini-series well. The characters are well-played. My favorite is the American flyer, Hart, who had also flown in the Spanish Civil War. The change in the pilots from beginning to end of the mini-series is interesting, as is the interaction of their various personalities. Definitely worth seeing. i ordered this set of DVD's titled "Piece of Cake" and they were as advertised. I enjoy watching them over and over. Average Rating:![]() |

Layer Cake [Blu-ray]ReviewsI don't know how popular this movie is but it's a definite must watch if you're into any kind of crime movies. It just pulls you in and you want to see what happens next. One thing I gotta say is that the soundtrack was very good and used well throughout. Nothing like the British to screw up a good crime movie. I think Joe Pesci could have taken them all with one hand tied behind his back. The first part of the movie is a first person narration on how to be a successful middleman. The rest of the movie breaks all the rules established by the narration. There are a number of factions in this story competeing with each other making the plot complex at times. The movie is only mildly humerous as the plot twists create the humor and not the boring dialouge. Mr. X, our middleman wants out of the business. He is given a couple of tasks to perform, locate a girl and find a buyer for a million hits of stolen ecstasy. There is plenty of killing and beating people up. The sex and nudity is brief. The hot blonde on the cover is not a main chracter. Her appearances are brief and foreboding. There are no likeable characters. Everyone is a bad guy. I enjoyed this movie, had a pretty good story. It is a very quiet movie when they are talking and gets very loud during action sequences. I liked Layer Cake enough to watch it again a few years later, and the blu-ray is a very nice upgrade. It's a well-shot film with many interesting angles and colorful moments which benefit from the hi-def. Director Vaughn doesn't have Ritchie's genius for camera movement but for his first effort behind the lens LC is decent enough, and Craig is about as good as he gets here, which is quite good. Craig is upstaged by many of the supporting cast, though, especially Meaney and Gambon. Meaney is becoming the new Michael Caine, ubiquitous in most every Brit and Irish film of the last decade, but it's all to the good as he always delivers the goods, and LC is no exception. Gambon is also excellent as usual. The score by Lisa Gerrard is solid and she delivers some of her patented distant wails which work well here as they're never too in your face. Or ears. The real hero of Layer Cake is JJ Connolly, writer of the screenplay and the novel it's based on. The movie has a perfect opening in a drugstore, which sums up our society's addiction to both drugs and pointless drug wars. If the whole film had stayed that tight this would be a modern classic, but it soon veers into semi-standard new Brit gangster film, though this is among the best of the bunch. The plot seems simple but we soon see how byzantine it all is, until the very end which is really a bit of a waste in some ways, though perhaps realistic, whatever that means in this context. But I'd recommend Layer Cake in any case to all fans of sharp dialogue and interesting plot twists; if you liked The Usual Suspects and Lock Stock, this is their offspring and you're bound to like it too. Like Fight Club, you never learn the name of the primary character -- played by Daniel Craig -- whose perspective Layer Cake portrays. (That is the ONLY thing it has in common with Fight Club, rest assured.) Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch grabbed a lot of attention as neo British gangster flicks, breathing new life into an old genre. And they do deserve the hype, imo. But Guy Ritchie's gangster films (except Revolver) have hearty senses of humour about themselves, as well as lots of gun wielding. Layer Cake and Sexy Beast (with an absolutely terrifying Ben Kingsley -- yes! -- as a psychotic head thug gangster) take themselves much more seriously, and therefore the violence that occurs is more viscerally affecting and less amusing and cartoonish. As a result, you're a bit more invested in the characters of Layer Cake, and the payoff is therefore different and somewhat more satisfying. This isn't to say Layer Cake is humor-less -- it isn't. But the humor is more subtle than the Guy Ritchie flicks; it doesn't smack you in the face so much as nudge you and wink knowingly. It's less slapstick and more satirical and cynical. Layer Cake has multiple intertwined stories because of the conflicting desires, motivations, and orders of the characters in the ensemble cast. The characters consist of higher up criminals who the Narrator (Craig, formally known as "XXXX" in the credits) sells drugs for, the Narrator himself, some corrupt law enforcement, and some amateur gangsters who want to jump into the big time. He's not at the bottom layer of the cake, but he's definitely got layers above him. However, the basic premise is one we've seen before: career criminal plans to pull major job and then retire happily ever after. But, thanks to the greed and machinations of rivals, superiors, and law enforcement, and a special side job he's supposed to take care of, nothing goes as planned. Thus the completion of his plans and his life, let alone his happily-ever-after retirement, are in jeopardy. The way that the plot manages to pull the rug out from under you with twists is not as important as the execution. The cinematography is gorgeous, the camera work is streamlined; not a shot is wasted, and almost everything shown is important to the plot later on. I love the kind of film where you have to PAY ATTENTION to truly get what's going on, and this is Layer Cake. If you try to surf the net or do other things while having this on in the background, you probably won't be impressed. But if you actually sit down to WATCH it, without distractions, you'll find plot points and criss-crosses galore to keep you guessing. Such a film doesn't have to perfectly resolve itself -- look at Howard Hawks' The Big Sleep, with Bogart and Bacall -- but it's amazingly cool that it captivates your attention WITHOUT massive violence, explosions, and gunfire. I need this more now than ever before. Maybe it's just me, but I've developed a sort of "blockbuster movie fatigue" caused by a steady diet of 90s-00s American blockbuster big budget films. They're always trying to top the one that came before with more/bigger special effects/CGI, tightly choreographed interpersonal violence/hand-to-hand combat, and some kind of large-scale mass destruction of big material objects or buildings, preferably employing major firepower and screeching metal. Eddie Izzard jokes in "Dress To Kill" that the Brits are known for "the smaller films" like "A Room With A View of a Staircase and a Pond", but his comparison of British and American films is particularly apt (and if you've never seen it, Google for it on Youtube; it's hilarious, as is Eddie). But I LIKE the fact that Layer Cake is tightly focused on what happens to a small, loyal crew of guys; I LIKE that the fate of the world or industrialized civilization doesn't "hang in the balance" -- like it unrealistically does in so many of those big, dumb, exciting blockbuster flicks. I LIKE that what Layer Cake has to say about the world, society and -- yes -- class can be told via the microcosm of the small(ish) world of the characters in the film. And I like the fact that the career criminal played by Craig is entirely non-thug-like; when he has to resort to gun violence, it's nowhere near as blase as it is in American movies (which is probably at least one reason why, come to think of it, I suffer from blockbuster fatigue). It gives Layer Cake a definite non-American perspective. (You *should* be upset by having to wield a gun or people around you doing so. Part of what's wrong here is that gun usage upsets no one and it's no big deal -- and consequently tons more people are killed by guns in the US, even when you adjust for population, than in other first-world nations. I know; I work in an inner city ER, where far too many kids under 20 come in with gunshot wounds. Every day in Chicago, once the weather gets warm, multiple people are getting shot, some fatally. Which is why we are the murder capital of the US off and on, as we were in the 90s, vying with NY, LA and Detroit for top honors of most homicides. Sigh. Ok, off soapbox now.) Anyway, the (surprising?) humanity of the protagonist makes movies like Layer Cake and its characters so much more realistic than any blockbuster, despite all their stylized cool. And cool it is. The ensemble cast is great. Craig's character's two right hand men are played by Colm Meaney (ST: TNG and ST: DS9, as well as many other UK and US productions), and George Harris (you've seen him if you watch BBC programs on PBS or BBC America; he's been in lots of stuff). One of the amateurs is played by Burn Gorman (Bleak House, Torchwood). The plotting is pretty tight, including flashbacks you think are pointless, but are NOT. All in all, well worth your money for rental or purchase. If you like Lock, Stock and Snatch, you will probably like this. If you like Sexy Beast, you will almost certainly like Layer Cake. And while I'm at it, I'll recommend In Bruges as well, although it's almost an anti-gangster gangster flick in setting and execution, at least 2/3-3/4 of the way through the film... but is still wildly entertaining. There's more bathos in Guy Ritchie's flicks, and more pathos in Layer Cake, Sexy Beast, and (especially) In Bruges. But this is a genre I like -- neo-British gangster flicks -- and Layer Cake is an especially great specimen. Note: if you are not a native of the United Kingdom, you may need to watch Layer Cake multiple times to get all the dialog... or else put the subtitles on (I did both). It stands up to repeat viewing, definitely. Average Rating:![]() |

Out of the AshesReviewsThe subject matter is sad and frightening, but the movie was informative and taught me a lot about this harrowing subject. I recommend it for those that want to learn more about this sad time in World history. Christine Lahti put on a great performance. This movie is well done and makes you think more about the struggles that people dealt with during the Holocaust. No movie is totally accurate on details (unless of course it's a documentary), but this movie is well put together. If we forget what happened we are likely to repeat it, but sadly it looks like we've forgotten. This is one of the better movies I have ever seen that deals with true life accountants of the inmates in Auschwitz during the WW II. Christine Lahiti was excellent in her part as Dr. Gisella Perl. This movie hit my heart I was so hurt and sad for the Jews of those days, the things that happen to them was terrible, but I love history and I loved this movie. it is a must see movie. 1. It almost anathema to write anything negative about the Holocaust, however this is one of those movies where the actual story & book is much much better than the movie. With that being said, if one hasn't read the book--> at least watch the movie. 2. The main criticism I have about the movie is that of the acting; the principal character portrays the doctor as being so arrogant and amazingly narcissistic... which is just difficult to watch at times. Otherwise, a decent movie--> but again, please read the book. Average Rating:![]() |

Piece of CakeReviewsGreat series and recount of the early days of the phony war before the real WWII got getting serious.

Elope Inc. Kid's Birthday CakeReviewsVery cute birthday hat! My daughter loved it and wants to wear it all the time. It is adjustable so it can be adjusted to fit my daughter but it will also fit me. I looks really cute in the birthday pictures. We gave this hat as a baby shower gift to a couple who have a unique sense of humor. Since they live several hundred miles from us, we wanted to give something that probably would not be duplicated. We were right. The hat was the only one they received. It was a hit and will continue to be enjoyed by the whole family on their birthdays. This was a terrific purchase for our 2 year olds birthday. The hat is absolutely darling. Our two year old absolutely loves it. This hat is too cute. It was a big hit this year. It has: - an adjustable band inside to fit all ages - well constructed - made from good materials - nice bright colors I think my daughter will enjoy for years to come! We use this hat for every kid in the family, including extended family, on their birthday. Everyone looks forward to their turn to wear the hat on their special day. My kids wear it everywhere they go on their birthday and love all the attention and good wishes they receive. The kids' friends all want a turn to wear it too. It's a constant hit! You say it's your birthday? Well, what could be sweeter than a beautiful frosty-white birthday cake--that you wear on your head?! That's right, there will be no mistaking the birthday girl when this hat is tossed into the ring... |

Happy Birthday Cake Gift Tote - Gourmet Food Gift BasketReviewscontains only 6 or 7 small packs of candy or cookies....no where near worth the cost. would never do it again. My Brother sent me a Happy Birthday gift Tote and it was sooo... much fun. The candy and cookies inside were tasty and delicious, and the tote was so cute. Of course now I'll have to send my brother something... I wonder what else they have? This was such a yummy gift. Yesterday was my birthday and I was really blue as I thought I would be all alone. My friends had a different plan and showed up at my door with this gift that really made my day special. It is as bright and cheerful as it is in the picture and comes with a very pretty bow made of different colored ribbons. I saved the ribbons for christmas wrapping as it would be a shame to waste them they are nice quality. We enjoyed all the candy and cake together which satisfied all of our sweet tooths, but I saved the cookies for me later to go with my tea. I highly recommend this gift and have already looked into ordering the over the hill one for my friend for her birthday next month. Great friends, great goodies, good times and good laughs. Happy birthday to me! I received this gift basket as a birthday present and was excited upon initially opening the box. From there it went downhill. The actual bag is about 2/3 stuffing with only the very top being product, and you get very little product for the price. Notables in it were "truffle cookies" that tasted like a stale vanilla cracker cookie (I'm guessing this was a substitute for the listed Balloon sugar cookies), a chocolate chip "tea cake" mini loaf that's hard to stomach more than a couple bites at a time (very bland and unappetizing), a small box of chocolate fudge that's the worst I've ever had (you probably made better fudge in home ec), a box marked "Gourmet Caramel Nut Assortment" that's actually just caramel pieces (equally disappointing). The only safe things in the package were some small (emphasis: small) packages of Jelly Bellies, fruit slice candies, and some generic hard strawberry candies. The boxes the individual products come in are deceivingly big, but trust me there's a lot of air in each of those boxes. For something by a company named "The Art of Appreciation," you can show your appreciation in much cheaper ways that doesn't leave the party on the receiving end wondering if they knew what in the world you were thinking. I wouldn't even pay $10 for this utter disappointment. Show someone you care by staying clear of this little number! (Update: I find it very interesting that within 24 hours of my posting the first review for this since it was released in 2004, a beaming almost storybook 5-star review comes up out of nowhere (Also note that this was that reviewer's first review ever--red flags galore). p.s. There was no "pretty bow" in this package, or if there was it was instantly forgetable. Obviously a lame attempt by the company to boost their rating. Stay away from this waste of money.) eeBoo Tea Party GameReviewsMy sister recommended this game to our mother after she played it on a recent visit with her grandchildren ages 4 and 6. She bought it to play with her great grandchildren and they love it. Every time they visit they insist on playing it at least 3 times... especially when they beat GG. Mom told her sister about it and my aunt had me order one for her so she would have a game to play with her great grandchildren when they come to visit. I purchased this game for my 5 year old niece last year for Christmas. She loves tea parties. She is still playing this game til this day. Which, for children, rarely happens. I am not sure how educational it is, but she does enjoy it. If you're an adult and you're forced to play this game over and over it does get a little tiring. But that is with almost any game though. It's a fun and simple enough game that my 6 year old nephew doesn't mind playing it with her. I explained the directions to her one time, and never went over them again. This is a perfect, not over the top, gift that most little girls will enjoy. My three year old daughter loves this game. It has taught her the importance of taking turns and that not always winning is okay. She even plays with the pieces and creates her own tea party with her dolls and my husband and I. Great game and toy! My 4 year old and 8 year old have played with this tea party game for months now. They just love it! VERY HIGH QUALITY. My 4 year old daughter was given this as a big sister gift when her brother was born. It's been a terrific toy. I had a long recovery from my son's birth, and this was a great game for us to play together while I lay on the couch. It has also been a good thing for her to play with relatives who can't get on the floor and play with her toys. She plays this with her friends, or they just use the pieces to have tea parties without playing the game. It has proven to be quite versatile and fun. Average Rating:![]() |
